This project is sited on the Mona Vale headland with expansive views over Mona Vale Beach to the south. The view however is not apparent at street level and this asset is withheld from occupants until well after entering the building interior. This dramatises the impact of entering the key living areas where the view is finally revealed to the occupant.
A further design challenge for this project was to find a way to give south facing dwellings access to direct sun and warmth from the north. This is achieved by providing a north-facing skylight near the centre of the building to trap the warm winter sun.
In addition, the garaging for the development was placed partially buried at the rear of the site to enable the south facing frontage for each building to be preserved for useable floor space.
Finally, the pair of duplexes have a reasonably large building mass when compared with other family homes in the street. The technique used to deal with this scale issue was to form the buildings as 2 level podiums with a setback roof element for the top level.
