The Drying Green Park Amenities seamlessly integrate with the new urban park design in the heart of Sydneys Green Square Town Centre. Together with LandscapeArchitects McGregor + Coxall we designed a new recreation space inspired by folding origami structures and in reference to the sites historic use as a lawn to dry wool - the Drying Green.
Our design combines public amenities, a substation and other infrastructure services for the surrounding suburb into a folding landscaped mound.
The design enables a seamless integration of the services into the park, taking the shape of the landscape and less of a building. The northern facade vertically rises up from the ground allowing access to the amenities below the angular landscape.
Faceted, white off-form concrete picks up on the foot path materiality and animates wall through changing light and shade throughout the day. A communal circular basin is the singular element placed in the entry, structuring the space while allowing unobstructed passive surveillance. Polished aluminium lined skylights echo the shape of the basin below and provide light and ventilation to the WCs.The reduced material palette of white concrete and mirror polished aluminium is supported by a white washed timber lining to the entry space, adding to the subtle play of texture, light and shadow.
